Fitter and machinist jobs in Australia for Malaysians: why a line worker faces a different visa test
Tips · 2026-11-06 · 9 min read

Manufacturing jobs in Australia for Malaysians are not one door but two: a skilled fitter or machinist is judged on a trade occupation, while a general factory hand is judged on whether that exact job sits on an eligible list at all. If you are searching kerja kilang Australia, the first job is to work out which of the two your own experience really matches. This guide shows how to do that with the official lists, and what to gather before an employer or an assessor asks.
Skilled fitter or general factory role: why the label matters
The Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482) is a temporary visa that lets an employer sponsor a suitably skilled worker to fill a position they cannot fill with a suitably skilled Australian. Our Skills in Demand (482) visa guide for Malaysians covers the basics.
In the Core Skills stream the worker must be nominated for an occupation on the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL). The worker must also be paid the Annual Market Salary Rate for that occupation and no less than the Core Skills Income Threshold, which is AUD79,423 for nomination applications lodged between 1 July 2026 and 30 June 2027.
That is why a title on a payslip is not enough. A machinist who sets up and runs precision equipment is describing a trade. A packing or line role may describe something the lists do not cover. The only way to know is to look up the occupation, not the job advert.
What the first steps look like for Malaysians in manufacturing
The combined list of eligible skilled occupations shows whether an occupation is on the CSOL, the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List, the Short-term Skilled Occupation List or the Regional Occupation List. It also names the skills assessing authority. Open the Home Affairs skilled occupation list and search for the closest match to your duties.
| Your situation | What to check first |
|---|---|
| Fitter, machinist or other trade you hold an SKM in | Find the occupation on the list, note its assessing authority, then ask whether a skills assessment is needed |
| Production or line worker with years on the floor | Check whether your exact duties match a listed occupation before you apply for any sponsored role |
| Supervisor or team leader on the shop floor | Match your real duties to a listed occupation, not your title, and keep evidence of what you did |
| Applying to New Zealand | Look for an accredited employer and check your experience against the AEWV rule on years or qualification level |
Our own board shows what employers ask for. The manufacturing jobs on JobsAbroad Malaysia are a useful way to see how roles are named, and a live example such as this CNC machinist role in Sydney shows the sort of duties an assessor may compare against your record.
Where your Malaysian plant experience can transfer
Malaysia-born people working in Australia include technicians and trades workers: in the 2021 Census, 8,211 (8.3%) of employed Malaysia-born people in Australia were Technicians and Trades Workers. That tells you the trade route is a real one, not that any single job is available to you.
What usually transfers is evidence of hands-on skill: the machines you ran, the tolerances you held, the maintenance you did, the quality checks you signed and the safety routines you followed. Describe each one in plain English with dates. A Bahasa Malaysia letter from a plant is useful too, but it needs an English translation; our guide to translating Bahasa Malaysia documents for a visa explains what the translation must show.
How your SKM fits in
The Malaysian Skills Certification, run by the Department of Skills Development (JPK), has five levels: Sijil Kemahiran Malaysia Tahap 1 to 3, Diploma Kemahiran Malaysia Tahap 4 and Diploma Lanjutan Kemahiran Malaysia Tahap 5. JPK says the certificate is recognised by industry in Malaysia and offers a career path comparable to one based on academic qualifications.
It can be obtained in three ways: training at accredited centres, the National Dual Training System, or recognition of prior achievement (PPT), where an assessor reviews your past work and training. If you learned on the job, read how PPT turns years on the job into a certificate. To explain the levels to an overseas employer, see how to put SKM, DKM and DLKM on your CV.
Australia is a separate system. A Malaysian certificate does not replace an Australian assessment where one is required, so plan to be assessed rather than assume you will be waved through.
Skills assessment and experience: the two checks that catch people out
Some primary 482 applicants must have a mandatory skills assessment, by Trades Recognition Australia or VETASSESS depending on the occupation. It must be started before the visa application is lodged, or the application is not valid. Each assessing authority has its own procedures, timeframes and charges, so read the authority's own page before you plan a date.
Separately, applicants must have at least 1 year of relevant work experience in the nominated occupation or a related field, gained within the last 5 years. Part-time or casual work must add up to at least 12 months full-time. If you left manufacturing for another job, count the months carefully.
If your training was practical and you have no formal paper for it, an Australian qualification pathway may be worth exploring. RPLDirect's Certificate II in Engineering - Production Technology page shows what one entry-level engineering qualification covers. It is information only, and a qualification does not mean a visa or a job will follow.
A step-by-step plan for the next four weeks
- Write down your main duties in plain English, one line per task, with the machines and materials you handled.
- Search the official occupation list for the closest match and note which list it appears on and who assesses it.
- Collect proof: SKM or DKM certificates, employer letters, payslips and any training records, with certified English translations where needed.
- Count your experience in the last 5 years, adding part-time months up to full-time equivalents.
- Read the assessing authority's page for your occupation and note its timeframes and charges.
- Only then look at sponsored roles, and ask each employer which visa pathway it would use.
When you reach the CV stage, a tool such as Build AI CV can help you turn those plain-English duties into a clear one-page document.
Is the trade route also a New Zealand idea?
New Zealand uses a different test. The Accredited Employer Work Visa is for people with a job offer from an accredited employer, who must send the applicant a link to the online application form. Applicants must show 2 years or more of relevant job experience, or a qualification at level 4 or higher on the New Zealand Qualifications and Credentials Framework, in the same field as the job.
Read the Immigration New Zealand AEWV page and our AEWV guide for Malaysians before you reply to any offer. Welders and tilers face the same evidence question, as our posts on welders and trade certificates and tiler evidence show.
Common mistakes Malaysian manufacturing workers make
- Trusting the job title. A title such as technician or operator does not decide the occupation. Your duties do.
- Starting the visa before the assessment. Where an assessment is mandatory, it must be started before lodging.
- Letting experience go stale. The 482 looks at work gained within the last 5 years.
- Sending untranslated documents. Bahasa Malaysia letters need an English translation with the translator's details.
- Paying anyone who promises a job. Nobody can promise a visa or a sponsored role. Check any agent's registration before you pay.
Frequently asked questions
Can a Malaysian factory worker get a sponsored visa for Australia?
It depends on the role, not on the word factory. The Skills in Demand (482) visa needs the employer to nominate an occupation that is on the Core Skills Occupation List, so check the combined list of eligible skilled occupations for the exact job title before you apply.
Does my SKM count in Australia?
Your Sijil Kemahiran Malaysia is evidence of training and skill, and it is recognised by industry in Malaysia. For a skilled trade, Australia may still ask for a skills assessment, so treat the SKM as one strong document in a file that also holds work letters and payslips.
Which skills assessing body looks at fitters and machinists?
The combined list of eligible skilled occupations names the assessing authority for each occupation. Some applicants are assessed by Trades Recognition Australia and others by VETASSESS, so look up your own occupation rather than guessing.
How much experience do I need for the 482 visa?
Applicants must have at least 1 year of relevant work experience in the nominated occupation or a related field, gained within the last 5 years. Part-time or casual work must add up to at least 12 months full-time, so keep records that show your hours.
What does New Zealand ask of a production or factory applicant?
For the Accredited Employer Work Visa, you need a job offer from an accredited employer, and you must show 2 years or more of relevant job experience or a qualification at level 4 or higher on the New Zealand framework, in the same field as the job.
Key takeaways
- Skilled trade roles and general factory roles are tested differently, so look up your occupation on the official list first.
- The 482 needs a nominated CSOL occupation, at least 1 year of recent experience and, for some, a skills assessment started before lodging.
- Your SKM is valuable evidence, but Australia may still assess your trade itself.
- New Zealand asks for an accredited employer plus 2 years of experience or a level 4 qualification.
- Keep dated, translated proof of your duties, and never pay for a promise of a job or visa.
