New Zealand working holiday visa for Malaysians: 1,150 places a year and three papers to time right

New Zealand's working holiday visa for Malaysia lets Malaysian citizens aged 18 to 30 stay for up to 6 months and take temporary jobs along the way, with no job offer needed to apply. Immigration New Zealand (INZ) offers 1,150 of these visas each year, the cost starts from NZD $770, and you must hold at least NZD $2,250 for living expenses. When we checked on 8 Oct 2026, INZ showed the visa as closed for 2026 and said people can apply next year. So treat this as a get-ready guide: the rules, the ringgit sums, and the three papers you need to time carefully.

The New Zealand working holiday visa for Malaysians at a glance

Officially it is the Malaysia Working Holiday Visa, and the rules below come from INZ's page for the Malaysia Working Holiday Visa.

CostFrom NZD $770About RM1,760
Living moneyAt least NZD $2,250, plus a ticket out or the money to buy oneAbout RM5,150, plus your fare

One more rule: you cannot apply if INZ has ever granted you a New Zealand working holiday visa before, so this is a visa to use once and use well.

What it comes to in ringgit

Two official amounts shape your budget: the visa cost from NZD $770 and living money of at least NZD $2,250, or NZD $3,020 together. At Bank Negara Malaysia's middle rate of RM2.2873 to the New Zealand dollar, published for 8 Oct 2026, that is about RM1,760 for the visa and about RM5,150 in living money: about RM6,910 for both.

Treat the ringgit figures as a rough comparison at that day's rate. Rates change daily, so convert again in the week you pay.

Three costs sit outside those sums: your ticket out of New Zealand, the RM20.00 service charge for a Certificate of Good Conduct, and the clinic's fee if INZ asks for a medical. Our ringgit budget for an overseas work move sets these sums beside the Australian ones.

Three papers with a clock on them

INZ puts a time limit on your passport, your police certificate and your medical results. Each clock runs differently, and getting the order wrong can mean paying twice. Start with the passport: if it falls short, renew it before anything else.

PaperINZ's ruleThe Malaysian sideWhen to act
PassportValid for at least 3 months after the visa expirese-Konsular needs at least 6 months of validity left for a Certificate of Good Conduct applicationNow: renew first if it is short
Police certificateLess than 6 months old, if INZ asksRM20.00, processed within 30 working days, valid for 1 year from approvalClose to the time you can apply
Medical resultsLess than 3 months old, if INZ asksMust come from one of six INZ panel physicians in MalaysiaOnly once INZ asks

Certificate of Good Conduct: fresh beats early

Malaysia's police certificate is the Certificate of Good Conduct (Sijil Kelakuan Baik, SKB). You apply through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs e-Konsular system, the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) does the security screening, and Malaysian citizens register with their MyKad number, not their passport number.

The trap: the certificate is valid for 1 year on the Malaysian side, but INZ wants police certificates less than 6 months old. For your visa the shorter clock counts, so a certificate collected this year could be too old by the time you can apply.

Too late is risky as well: e-Konsular processes a complete application within 30 working days, subject to PDRM screening, while INZ shows 80% of these visas processed within 2 weeks.

e-Konsular also says missing supporting documents are a common reason for rejection. A working holiday needs no job offer, so check its helpdesk notes for the supporting document that fits your purpose. Once approved, you download and print the certificate yourself.

Medical checks: wait until you are asked

Results must be less than 3 months old, so an early check-up is money spent for nothing. INZ also says that where a country has a panel physician, you must use one for a visa chest X-ray or medical examination.

INZ's panel physician list for Malaysia has six entries: IOM Kuala Lumpur Clinic, Laurent Bleu Medical Clinic and Life Care Diagnostic Medical Centre in Kuala Lumpur, Penang Adventist Hospital, KPJ Sabah Specialist Hospital, and Wellness Clinic in Kuching. You pay the clinic; INZ never asks for medical payments itself.

How to get ready before the visa opens again

  1. Check the basics. You are a Malaysian citizen aged 18 to 30, and INZ has never granted you a New Zealand working holiday visa.
  2. Look at your passport. Will it still be valid 3 months after a 6-month stay would end? If not, renew.
  3. Build the money. About RM6,910 at the 8 Oct 2026 rate covers the visa cost and the minimum living money. Add your fare out.
  4. Register on e-Konsular. Use your MyKad number, read what a complete Certificate of Good Conduct application needs, and note your nearest panel physician.
  5. Watch the official page. Genuine INZ websites include '.immigration.govt.nz' exactly.
  6. Apply when it opens. INZ takes visa fees by debit or credit card on its own forms, or at an approved Visa Application Centre.

Work and pay once you land

The visa allows temporary jobs for up to 6 months, but not a permanent job. If your real goal is kerja di New Zealand for the long run, skip ahead to the section on longer stays.

From 1 April 2026, New Zealand's adult minimum wage is $23.95 per hour before tax, or $958 for a 40-hour week. At the same Bank Negara rate that is about RM55 an hour, or about RM2,190 for a full week, again as a rough comparison.

  • Everyone in New Zealand, migrants included, has the same minimum employment rights.
  • Employers cannot charge you fees for a job or make you pay their recruitment costs, even through a third party.
  • An IRD number identifies you for tax. It is free to apply for and you keep it for life.

New Zealand or Australia: which working holiday fits you?

The two schemes are not twins.

Australia gives you twice the time, but it asks for more savings and has its own qualification, English and letter-of-support rules. See our guide to Australia's Work and Holiday visa for Malaysian applicants. If a shorter trip on a smaller savings target appeals, New Zealand's scheme may be the better match.

Past 30, or want more than six months?

A working holiday is not the only way to work in New Zealand from Malaysia. The Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) is for people with a job offer from an accredited employer, for at least 30 hours of work a week. It costs from NZD $1,540 and lets the holder stay up to 5 years depending on the job. Applicants must show 2 years or more of relevant experience, or a level 4 or higher qualification on New Zealand's framework, in the same field as the job.

Our guide to working in New Zealand from Malaysia on the AEWV explains that route, and live listings such as this carpenter job in Christchurch show what employers look for in a longer-term role.

Common mistakes Malaysians make with this visa

  • Collecting the Certificate of Good Conduct too early. Its 1-year validity is Malaysia's rule; INZ's rule is less than 6 months old.
  • Doing a medical before INZ asks, or at the wrong clinic. Results must be under 3 months old and come from a panel physician.
  • Checking the passport against the flight date only. It must stay valid for at least 3 months after the visa expires.
  • Treating it as a doorway to a permanent job. The visa does not allow one, and INZ warns that a temporary visa comes with no promise of residence.
  • Paying a stranger to "hold a place". INZ never asks for visa fees to be paid into a bank account; its advice on immigration scams lists other warning signs.

Frequently asked questions

Is the New Zealand working holiday visa open for Malaysians right now?

No. When we checked on 8 Oct 2026, Immigration New Zealand showed the Malaysia Working Holiday Visa as closed for 2026 and said people can apply next year.

How much money do I need for the New Zealand working holiday visa from Malaysia?

The visa costs from NZD $770 and you must have at least NZD $2,250 for living expenses, plus a ticket out of New Zealand or the money to buy one. At Bank Negara Malaysia's middle rate for 8 Oct 2026, the two amounts together are about RM6,910, as a rough comparison.

Do I need a job offer before I apply?

No job offer is needed to apply. Once you are in New Zealand the visa allows temporary jobs for up to 6 months, but not a permanent job.

Will I need a police certificate and a medical check?

Possibly. If Immigration New Zealand asks, you must give police certificates less than 6 months old and medical results less than 3 months old. For Malaysia the police certificate is the Certificate of Good Conduct from e-Konsular, and a medical must be done by a panel physician on the official list.

Do I have to use an agent to apply?

No. You are not required to use an adviser to apply for a New Zealand visa, and using one does not get an application prioritised. Anyone who gives New Zealand immigration advice must by law be licensed by the Immigration Advisers Authority unless exempt.
