Malaysian graduates in New Zealand: which post-study visa could keep you working after your course?
Visa guide · 2026-09-23 · 3 min read

Many Malaysians choose New Zealand for a diploma or degree, then wonder what comes next. From 16 November 2026 the answer gets wider. Two pathways open for graduates who want to work after finishing: a brand-new Short-Term Graduate Work Visa, and a Post-Study Work Visa (PSWV) that now reaches more people. The practical side is below, including a deadline that has already passed for some.
Why the change matters
Graduates with diplomas and certificates often found themselves qualified and ready to work but without a visa that matched their level of study. These two pathways aim at that gap. Applications also move fully onto Immigration New Zealand's upgraded Immigration Online platform.
Side by side
| Point | Short-Term Graduate Work Visa | Post-Study Work Visa (Graduate Diploma route) |
|---|---|---|
| Status | New visa | Existing visa, eligibility widened |
| Qualification | NZQCF level 5-7 | NZQCF level 7 Graduate Diploma, plus a bachelor's degree |
| Length | Up to six months, open work rights | Tied to the time studied, capped at one year |
| Partner and children | Cannot join as dependants | Can be included on their own visas |
| Repeat grants | Single use only | One-time only |
The Short-Term Graduate Work Visa
This visa gives time to look for a job, gain local experience and possibly move on to an Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV). To qualify you need an NZQCF level 5-7 qualification, at least 24 weeks of full-time study in New Zealand, proof of at least NZD 5,000 in available funds, and you must not already be eligible for a PSWV. You also must not have held this visa or a PSWV before. Medical and chest X-ray clearance may be needed depending on your length of stay.
Graduates of English-language, foundation and bridging courses are not eligible. Holders cannot own a business, and family members cannot come as dependants, although they may apply separately as visitors or under other categories.
Watch the timing. You must apply within three months of your student visa expiring, so anyone whose student visa expired before 16 August 2026 has already missed the window.
The Post-Study Work Visa for Graduate Diploma holders
Graduates of an NZQCF level 7 Graduate Diploma can now qualify if they also hold a bachelor's degree, from New Zealand or overseas, whenever it was earned. You must have studied the whole Graduate Diploma full time, with no cross-crediting or recognition of prior learning. You will need a genuine bachelor's degree certificate showing the qualification type and institution, plus an official academic transcript.
One welcome change: an overseas bachelor's degree does not need a separate International Qualification Assessment, although Immigration New Zealand can still check that it is genuine.
Applications from 16 November 2026
Every application for both visas from 16 November 2026 goes through Immigration Online. Paper PSWV applications submitted on or before 15 November 2026 are still processed the old way. After that, online only.
What to get ready from Malaysia
- Certified copies of your degree certificate and transcript, with English translations of anything in Bahasa Malaysia.
- A police clearance from the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), often called a Certificate of Good Conduct, if one is requested.
- Bank evidence for your funds, if you apply for the Short-Term visa.
The main lesson is timing. Windows are strict, both visas are one-shot, and eligibility depends on choices made before you graduate, such as whether your course was full time. Check the official visa pages now rather than after your course ends.
