Accountant skills assessment for Australia: three checks Malaysians should make before applying
Tips · 2026-10-30 · 10 min read

The accountant skills assessment for Australia is one of three checks Malaysians should get right before applying for sponsored accounting jobs. You need to prove three things on paper: that your degree is a recognised, accredited qualification, that your exact occupation can be sponsored and has passed (or will pass) the right skills assessment, and that your work history reads clearly to an Australian employer. Skip any of them, and a good Malaysian career can stall at the first screening.
Why Malaysian accountants already have a head start
Malaysians are not new to Australian offices. In the 2021 Australian Census, 39,165 employed Malaysia-born people in Australia, or 39.4%, worked as Professionals, the largest single group.
That history helps, but it is no shortcut: you still need a sponsoring employer, an eligible occupation and evidence an assessor can check.
Check one: is your degree on the Malaysian Qualifications Register?
Your first document is your degree, and the first question about it is whether it is accredited. In Malaysia, the place to confirm that is the Malaysian Qualifications Register (MQR). It is the national register, set up under Section 81 of the Malaysian Qualifications Agency Act 2007 (Act 679), of programmes, qualifications and higher education providers accredited under that Act.
Before you send a CV anywhere, search the MQR for your exact programme and university and save a copy of the listing with your papers. If your MQA accounting degree came from a private university or college, check the programme name as well as the institution, because accreditation is given programme by programme.
What to do with transcripts in Bahasa Malaysia
Some older certificates or letters may be in Bahasa Malaysia. For Australian visa documents, Home Affairs says a translator outside Australia does not need to be accredited, but must put their name, contact details and language qualifications in English on each translation. Our guide to translating Bahasa Malaysia documents for a visa lists the details a translator must put on every page.
Check two: the occupation, the visa stream and the skills assessment
Australia does not sponsor "finance people" in general. A sponsor nominates one occupation, and everything else follows from that choice: which list it sits on, which visa stream fits, and which authority assesses you.
Find your occupation on the combined list
Home Affairs publishes a combined list of eligible skilled occupations. For each occupation it shows whether it is on the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL), the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL), the Short-term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL) or the Regional Occupation List (ROL), and it names the skills assessing authority. Search for the exact title that matches your duties, such as an accountant, an external auditor or a management accountant role, rather than the title on your name card.
Duties decide the match. A senior executive who mostly prepares management reports may fit a different occupation from one who signs off audits. We explained this for managers in our post on how assessors read your duties, not your name card, and the same logic applies to finance roles.
What the Skills in Demand (482) visa asks
Most sponsored accounting jobs in Australia use the Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482). It lets an employer sponsor a suitably skilled worker for a position it cannot fill with a suitably skilled Australian. In the Core Skills stream, the worker must be nominated in a CSOL occupation and paid the Annual Market Salary Rate for that occupation, and no less than the Core Skills Income Threshold (CSIT).
For nominations lodged between 1 July 2026 and 30 June 2027, the CSIT is AUD79,423. That is about RM226,000 a year, a rough comparison at the Bank Negara Malaysia middle rate published for 19 Oct 2026, and rates change. You also need at least 1 year of relevant work experience in the occupation or a related field, gained within the last 5 years. Our Skills in Demand (482) visa guide for Malaysians covers the rest of the visa.
How the accountant skills assessment fits in
A skills assessing authority checks that your skills meet the standard it sets for an occupation, and Home Affairs only accepts an assessment from the authority named for that occupation. Each authority has its own procedures, timeframes and charges.
For the 482 visa, some primary applicants must have a mandatory skills assessment, and Home Affairs says on the Core Skills stream page that it must be started before the visa application is lodged, or the application is not valid. Whether your accounting occupation is one of those is something to confirm on the official pages and with your sponsor. For permanent routes, the employer-sponsored subclass 186 Direct Entry stream asks for a positive skills assessment before lodging, unless you are exempt, together with at least 3 years of relevant experience and an age under 45. The Home Affairs skills assessment page also says an assessment with no validity period shown lasts 3 years from the date of issue.
| Check | Where to confirm it | What to keep in your folder |
|---|---|---|
| Degree is accredited | Malaysian Qualifications Register (MQR) | Degree, transcripts, a saved copy of the MQR listing |
| Occupation can be sponsored | Home Affairs combined list of eligible skilled occupations | The occupation title and list (CSOL or other) your duties match |
| Assessing authority | The same combined list, then the authority's own website | Its document checklist and your application or outcome letter |
| Salary meets the threshold | Home Affairs salary requirements page | The written offer showing the annual salary |
| Recent experience | Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482) Core Skills stream page | Employment letters covering at least 1 year in the last 5 years |
Check three: a CV that reads like an Australian finance CV
A Malaysian finance CV often opens with personal details, a photo and a long list of software. Australian employers usually prefer a short profile, then experience with plain, measurable duties: month-end close, reconciliations, tax returns, audit work, payroll, consolidation, reporting to a board or a regional office.
- Lead each job with what you were responsible for, then the systems you used.
- When you mention Malaysian rules or reporting standards, name them in full and say briefly what they covered, without assuming the reader knows them.
- Think twice before adding your IC number, religion, marital status or a photo; a finance CV for Australia is about your work.
- Keep it to two or three pages.
For a clean first draft in this format, Build AI CV can turn your Malaysian experience into an Australian-style CV you then check line by line. Employers in finance also like to see work history they can trust; a profile on Talent Tabloid is one way to show verified experience alongside your CV.
One more reason to sharpen the CV: routine office tasks are where automation is moving fastest. Our post on how AI is changing white-collar jobs in Australia is worth reading before you decide which of your duties to put first.
Step by step: from Kuala Lumpur desk to a sponsored offer
- Search the MQR for your exact programme and save the listing with your degree and transcripts.
- Write down your real duties for each role, then match them to one occupation on the Home Affairs combined list.
- Note the list it sits on and the assessing authority named beside it, and read that authority's own requirements.
- Gather employment letters that show your duties, dates and hours, with English translations where needed.
- Rewrite your CV in the Australian format above and keep it consistent with those letters.
- Apply only for roles where the employer states it will sponsor, and confirm the occupation and salary in writing.
- Start the skills assessment early if your occupation needs one, because an invalid 482 application cannot be fixed later.
Live roles in this field are on our accounting and finance jobs page, where every vacancy comes from an employer prepared to sponsor. Our post on visa fees for Australia in ringgit shows which costs fall on you and which the employer must pay.
Finance jobs in New Zealand from Malaysia
New Zealand works differently. The Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) is for people with a job offer from an accredited employer, who sends you a link to the online application form. The offer must be for at least 30 hours a week, from an accredited employer with an approved job check, and paid at least the market rate for the job.
You must show 2 years or more of relevant experience, or a qualification at Level 4 or higher on the New Zealand Qualifications and Credentials Framework, in the same field as the job. For a Malaysian accounting graduate with a few years in practice, either route can work. Read our AEWV guide for Malaysians before you accept an offer.
Common mistakes Malaysian finance professionals make
- Applying under a job title, not an occupation. "Finance Executive" means different things in Petaling Jaya and Perth. Match your duties to one listed occupation first.
- Assuming the degree speaks for itself. Keep proof that the programme is accredited on the MQR, not only the scroll.
- Leaving the skills assessment too late. Where it is mandatory for the 482, it must be started before you lodge, or the application is not valid.
- Old experience. The 482 counts relevant work in the last 5 years; a role that ended long ago may not help.
- Paying for a job or sponsorship. Applicants must not have offered or paid a benefit in return for sponsorship in the past 3 years. Never pay an ejen for a sponsored offer.
- A CV that does not match your letters. Dates and duties should agree.
Frequently asked questions
Can Malaysians get sponsored accounting jobs in Australia?
Yes, when an employer is willing to sponsor and the occupation fits the visa. The Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482) lets an employer sponsor a suitably skilled worker it cannot find locally, and the Core Skills stream needs a CSOL occupation and a salary of at least the CSIT.
Do I need an accountant skills assessment in Australia for the 482 visa?
Some primary 482 applicants must have a mandatory skills assessment, and it must be started before the visa is lodged. Check your exact occupation on the Home Affairs combined list, which names the assessing authority, and confirm with your sponsor whether the assessment is required for you.
Is my MQA accounting degree recognised in Australia?
Accreditation in Malaysia is shown on the Malaysian Qualifications Register, so start by confirming your programme is listed there. How an Australian assessing authority treats the degree is its own decision, made under its own rules, so read that authority's requirements for your occupation.
What salary must a sponsored accounting job in Australia pay?
In the Core Skills stream the salary must meet the Annual Market Salary Rate for the occupation and be no less than the CSIT. For nominations lodged from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027, the CSIT is AUD79,423 a year.
Can I work in finance in New Zealand instead?
Yes, through an accredited employer and the AEWV. You need a job offer for at least 30 hours a week at the market rate, plus 2 years or more of relevant experience or a Level 4 or higher qualification in the same field.
Key takeaways
- Confirm your degree is accredited on the MQR and keep the listing with your papers.
- Match your real duties to one occupation on the Home Affairs combined list, then read its assessing authority's rules.
- Start any mandatory skills assessment before a 482 application is lodged.
- Rewrite your CV in the Australian style, consistent with your employment letters.
- New Zealand's AEWV is an option with an accredited employer and 2 years of experience or a Level 4 qualification.
