Nearly 2 in 5 arrivals came to study: what New Zealand's July migration figures mean for Malaysians

Thinking about kerja luar negara in New Zealand? The latest monthly migration numbers are worth a few minutes of your time, because they show where the movement is really coming from, and it is not quite where many people assume.

July 2026 in plain numbers

New Zealand recorded a net migration gain of 5,200 in July 2026. That is more than double the 2,300 recorded in July 2025. Migrant arrivals climbed to 13,900, a 19 percent rise on a year earlier, while departures fell 7 percent to 8,700.

The detail that matters most: nearly 2 in 5 of those arrivals came in on student visas, timed almost exactly with the start of the second academic semester. Take that seasonal study bump out, and the July story looks far less like a general recovery in people moving to New Zealand for work.

The full-year picture is still below normal

Over the 12 months to July 2026, annual net migration reached 20,300, up from 9,600 the year before. That sounds healthy until you compare it with the long-run record. A typical July year has delivered a net gain closer to 31,000, so New Zealand is still meaningfully under its usual level, even after this lift.

GroupNet movement, July 2026 year
Non-New Zealand citizens+58,700
New Zealand citizens-38,300
Overall net gain20,300

In other words, New Zealand keeps attracting people from overseas while many of its own citizens move away.

Why so many New Zealanders head across the Tasman

For the year to December 2025, New Zealand lost a net 28,400 people to Australia: 19,100 arrivals from Australia against 47,500 departures. Between 2004 and 2013 that loss averaged around 30,000 a year. It then eased to roughly 3,000 a year between 2014 and 2019. Today's figure sits much closer to the older, heavier-loss era, so the pull towards Australia is back.

What this means if you are a Malaysian worker

These figures describe people movements, not job openings, so they cannot tell you whether a particular employer is hiring. They do give you a useful reading of the market: international education is doing most of the lifting, and the wider numbers are still soft. That is a reason to prepare carefully rather than rush.

A sensible checklist for Malaysians looking at work in New Zealand from Malaysia:

  • Check how your Sijil Kemahiran Malaysia (SKM) or other trade certificate will be viewed. Trades are usually assessed again abroad, and some, such as electrical and plumbing work, need occupational registration in New Zealand.
  • If a visa or employer asks for an English test, book IELTS or PTE early, even if you use English every day at work.
  • Keep certified copies of your certificates ready, with English translations of anything written in Bahasa Malaysia.
  • If a police certificate is requested, apply to the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) for a Certificate of Good Conduct.

For current visa settings, go straight to the official Immigration New Zealand work page rather than relying on forum posts.

The question to watch next

Whether this year's student arrivals turn into longer-term residents, or simply pass through on temporary visas, will decide if July was the start of a real trend or just a semester-driven blip. Until that is clear, plan on solid paperwork, a realistic timeline and applications to real employers only.
