An engineering and metal fabrication employer in Auckland is hiring a Workshop Technician who can run CNC machines and also fit, assemble, fabricate and coordinate jobs. It is a hands-on position for a practical all-rounder who takes ownership of production work and keeps it accurate and on time.

Reading engineering drawings, working out what each job needs and making sure finished components are ready for site installation are all part of the day. This is a broad workshop role, not a narrow machine operator position. The ad says employer-supported visa sponsorship may be available for eligible applicants.

Key Responsibilities

  • Study engineering drawings and job specifications to work out materials, dimensions, tolerances and assembly needs
  • Plan workshop jobs and set production priorities
  • Run CNC and general metal fabrication machinery
  • Do fitting, assembly and fabrication to specification, including basic MIG and TIG welding when needed
  • Measure and check finished components for accuracy
  • Get fabricated items and materials ready for site installation, with the right components and fasteners going to site teams
  • Catch fabrication problems before anything is dispatched
  • Keep in touch with workshop and site people
  • Look after workshop equipment and machinery
  • Keep the workshop safe, organised and efficient to a high quality standard
  • Visit installation sites from time to time to help with fitting work

Requirements & Eligibility

  • A solid background in metal fabrication, engineering or workshop operations
  • CNC machinery operating experience
  • Can read and interpret engineering drawings without close supervision
  • Strong fitting and assembly experience
  • Has coordinated, or been responsible for, workshop jobs
  • Basic MIG and TIG welding skills
  • Excellent measuring skills and attention to detail
  • Understands fabrication processes and the sequencing of work
  • Comfortable with common fabrication machinery and engineering tools
  • Practical problem-solving skills
  • Able to manage priorities and work independently
  • Good communication and teamwork, with a commitment to quality, safety and accurate workmanship
  • Experience with CNC laser cutting, tube laser cutting, press brakes, drilling or grinding equipment will be highly regarded
  • Available for immediate or near-immediate commencement
