A marine service business in Hamilton wants a Marine Technician / Outboard Motor Mechanic with real hands-on experience and the confidence to own the diagnosis, servicing and repair of marine engines. Your work will span engine diagnostics, mechanical repairs, marine electrical systems, commissioning and ongoing maintenance, split between the workshop, mobile call-outs and time on the water.

Key Responsibilities
- Track down cooling, fuel, electrical and mechanical problems on marine engines
- Maintain petrol outboards and other marine power units
- Repair engines, swap out components and carry out mechanical overhauls
- Strip, inspect and rebuild engines and associated parts
- Pinpoint mechanical defects and settle on the right repair
- Handle scheduled servicing, preventative maintenance, tune-ups, testing and performance checks
- Operate computerised diagnostic tools and the software made by the engine manufacturer
- Troubleshoot and fix starting, charging and electrical faults on boats
- Work on sterndrive and inboard systems as required
- Fit and configure outboard engines together with their controls, gauges and wiring
- Fit marine electronics, accessories and other equipment
- Run pre-delivery inspections and commissioning, including sea trials that confirm engines and systems perform
- Go out to customers for mobile servicing and repairs when needed
- Complete job sheets, service records and technical paperwork accurately, following manufacturer specifications and repair procedures
- Keep the workshop safe, organised and professional, and put consistent quality into every job
Requirements & Eligibility
- A relevant NZQF Level 4 marine, mechanical or related trade qualification, or an equivalent overseas qualification
- Minimum 3 years of relevant experience working with internal-combustion engines
- Hands-on experience with outboard or marine engines that you can demonstrate
- Proven skill in diagnosing engine faults and carrying out effective repairs
- Practical know-how in engine servicing and replacing mechanical components
- Background in marine electrical and charging systems
- Comfortable using computerised diagnostic equipment
- Can interpret manufacturer service manuals and technical specifications
- Mercury outboard and MerCruiser experience is highly regarded
- Knowledge of SmartCraft and DTS systems is advantageous
- Marine manufacturer training or certification is an advantage
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving ability
- Self-reliant, owning assigned jobs, while contributing positively within an experienced technical team
- Strong commitment to workplace safety and quality workmanship
- Full driver’s licence is preferred
- Must meet relevant New Zealand employment and immigration requirements
