A growing engineering business in Christchurch needs a Fitter Welder who can handle varied workshop jobs. Work ranges from custom truck decks and crane fit-outs to trailer builds and transport repairs, sometimes from detailed drawings and sometimes on your own fabrication judgement.
Suitable overseas applicants may be considered for employer-sponsored employment. Candidates must meet applicable New Zealand employment and visa requirements, and the team expects verifiable trade history from welders with at least five years behind them.

Key Responsibilities
- Build and fit custom truck decks and other transport structures
- Do crane fit-outs and the fabrication that goes with them
- MIG and TIG weld mild steel, stainless steel and aluminium
- Fabricate, fit and assemble components and structures
- Work from engineering drawings and technical specs
- Mark, measure, cut and prepare material accurately
- Work out what a fabrication or repair job needs and decide on a practical fix
- Repair trucks, truck bodies and transport equipment, along with general engineering jobs
- Turn around short-notice, fast projects efficiently
- Check finished work for dimensions, structural integrity and finish, and meet engineering and certification rules
- Work with engineers when inspection, certification or sign-off is needed, and keep a safe, professional workshop
Requirements & Eligibility
- Minimum 5 years of professional experience in fitting, welding or fabrication
- Proven hands-on fabrication and workshop background
- Strong MIG and TIG welding capability
- Experience with mild steel, stainless steel and aluminium/alloy
- Confident fitting and assembling fabricated structures
- Can understand and work from technical drawings
- Able to size up practical fabrication problems and solve them independently
- Close attention to measurements, tolerances and finished quality
- Reliable approach to safety, accuracy and workmanship
- Truck, transport or heavy fabrication experience is an advantage
- Welding tickets or relevant industry certifications are advantageous but not mandatory, and you should be willing to obtain additional welding certifications where required
- Able to provide verifiable evidence of relevant trade experience and employment history; must meet applicable New Zealand employment and visa requirements
