Key Responsibilities
- Deliver consistent food quality and presentation
- Prepare, cook and finish dishes to recipes and service needs
- Check ingredients for freshness, quality and suitability
- Handle prep work such as cleaning, chopping, blending, seasoning, heating and cooling, while watching cooking times and temperatures
- Adapt preparation for dietary and special food requirements
- Coordinate the kitchen through prep and service and give practical direction to the team
- Help lead a kitchen team of up to 12 people day to day
- Cover different kitchen sections confidently when needed
- Inspect delivered stock, flag anything below standard and store ingredients correctly
- Keep an eye on food supplies, inventory and equipment needs
- Assist with purchasing and supplier coordination
- Contribute new recipes, menu ideas and tweaks to existing dishes
- Keep kitchen processes accurate and consistent, using digital systems for accountability and reporting
- Track food usage and help control food costs and kitchen labour
- Keep management informed on how the kitchen is performing
- Support a positive, professional team culture
- Hold standards in busy and quiet trading periods alike
- Spot operational problems and act to fix them
- Maintain kitchen cleanliness, hygiene and equipment standards, following workplace procedures and food safety rules
- Contribute to ongoing improvement of kitchen systems and service standards
Requirements & Eligibility
- Minimum 3 years' professional kitchen experience
- Background in established restaurants, hospitality venues or commercial kitchens
- Experience in a senior or responsible kitchen position
- Genuine employment history relevant to the position that can be verified
- Practical cooking and food preparation skills you can demonstrate
- Strong knowledge of professional kitchen procedures
- Confident working across multiple kitchen sections
- Able to coordinate and support other kitchen staff
- Previous experience supervising or leading a kitchen team is highly desirable
- Strong understanding of food quality and presentation standards, and knowledge of dietary requirements and safe food preparation
- Experience with stock control, inventory and kitchen supplies
- Understanding of food costs and operational efficiency is advantageous
- Experience assisting with menu development or recipe creation is advantageous
- Calm and efficient under service pressure
- Strong teamwork and communication, with a professional attitude and willingness to take responsibility
- Able to work well with suppliers and management
- Willing to learn the digital systems used for restaurant accountability and reporting
- Fluent English skills in speaking, reading and writing
- Able to provide supporting documentation for qualifications and professional experience; must meet applicable New Zealand employment and visa requirements
